Director Of Marketing Communications
Julie Steele is Director of Marketing Communications at Manifold. In this capacity, she is helping to build awareness of our brand and services and is also working with our engineering team to spread our ideas and approach to AI to a broader audience. Julie knows how to translate technical ideas for a variety of audiences in a way that builds real understanding and relationships.
Prior to Manifold, Julie was Director of Communications at Silicon Valley Data Science (SVDS), where she was instrumental in developing a strong sense of brand and thought leadership for them in the data science community. She also participated directly in sharing their experiences, speaking at industry conferences such as ODSC and Strata and authoring two editions of a report called Understanding the Chief Data Officer.
Julie's experience on both sides of the content creation process began when she worked at O'Reilly Media, first as an Acquisitions Editor working on books related to the tools and technologies—such as Python, SQL, Oracle, natural language processing, and machine learning—that eventually came together in the practice now known as data science. As O'Reilly began to gather the early data science practitioners and convene the first Strata conferences, Julie worked closely with the conferences team and program committee to help curate content and organize the events. She also served as co-chair with Colin Hill, CEO of GNS Healthcare, of O'Reilly's Strata Rx conference on data science in healthcare.
As she spent more time in the emerging data science community, Julie's long-standing interest in and practice of graphic design suddenly gained new meaning and she began applying it to data visualization. She is co-author with Noah Iliinsky of both Beautiful Visualization (2010) and Designing Data Visualizations (2011). She also taught a course on data metrics and visualization in the Design for Social Innovation MFA program at the School for Visual Arts in New York City.
"I am delighted to be working with the team at Manifold," she says. "There are some very important ideas at the core of the company—such as Lean AI—that I am looking forward to sharing with the larger community."
Julie earned her Master of Arts degree in Political Science from Rutgers University–Newark, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Calvin College. She is a proponent of the Oxford Comma.
